A Girl from Haryana (Saina Nehwal)

 

Saina Nehwal, an Indian treasure that resides in the hearts of every Indian. A 28-year-old girl has been making our nation proud by conquering all the milestones of the badminton world. It seems that breaking records and creating history is just child play for this five and a half feet Indian powerhouse.

She began her badminton career to fulfill her mother’s lifelong dream to be an international player, she never gets content with her accomplishment and persisted to rank as number 1 in the world by the badminton world federation. She also became the first and the only Indian woman to achieve this monumental accomplishment. Her cap is designed with feathers from being the first-ever Indian woman to win a Super Series Tournament to the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships and then medal in Badminton at the Olympics.

Her mother uses to say this, Saina Nehwal is a daughter of Harvir Singh Nehwal and Usha Rani Nehwal, was born on 17th March 1990 in Hisar into a jat family. Both parents were badminton State Champions. In her early childhood, her mother was the first coach and only mentor for her. Saina also a black belt in karate but badminton was her first choice. She started playing badminton formally at the age of eight after her family moved from Haryana to Hyderabad. Her Initiation into the game was primarily because she didn’t know the local language well. Her mother motivates her by saying (Gold Lana Hai Olympics Mai). She wanted to fulfill her mother’s wish. They both commute almost 25 km daily to learn badminton. Govardhan and Nani prasad were her Initial coaches and helped her to get the good basics of badminton and motivated her to take sports as a profession and made her competent and confident to play national level.  

 

The Indian shuttler successfully did that by representing India at the highest level of 2008 at the Beijing Olympics. En route to becoming the first woman to reach the last eight of Olympics quarter-finals, a young Saina Nehwal defeated the world five wang Chen of Hong Kong before losing to Indonesia’s Maria Kristin Yulianti in the quarter-finals of Beijing 2008. 20-year-old Saina Nehwal showed was hugely applauded back home as she was conferred with the Arjuna award in 2009 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel ratan award in 2010. Nehwal’s confidence was now flourishing as she began to establish herself on the (BWF) That year also very special Commonwealth games gold, as Nehwal back from match point down against

Malaysia’s Wong mew choo to reach the top of the podium in New Delhi. Under the tutelage of legendary coach Pallela Gopichand, a 22-year-old Saina Nehwal then wrote a new chapter in Indian badminton at the London 2012 Olympics. In April 2015, Nehwal became the number one ranked player in the world, the first-ever Indian to have reached the top spot. At the commonwealth in 2018, Nehwal defeated PV Sindhu in the gold medal match to claim her second title, eight years after her first.

In her 12-years-long badminton career, Saina Nehwal has won over 24  win  international titles, eleven of which are Super series titles. She is also Indian to have won at least one medal in every BWF major- the World Championships, the World Junior Championships, and the most precious bronze medal at the Olympics.
